The Advantages of Fiber Optic

Fiber offers bandwidth beyond that required for most network applications.

For example, over a 100-meter run, 62.5/125-micrometer fiber has a bandwidth of 1600 MHz at 850 nm and 5000 MHz (at 1300 nm). This extra bandwidth capacity greatly facilitates system upgrades.

Another advantage of optical fiber is low power loss, which allows for longer transmission distances. In a copper network, for example, the recommended transmission distance is usually limited to 100 meters. However, in a fiber optic network, one can transmit up to 2,000 meters.

In a copper network, increasing the signal frequency, as required by high data rates, also increases loss. This is another limiting factor on transmission distance that fiber does not have.

Also, it has been estimated that most copper-based network outages result from the limitations inherent in copper components and cabling products. Impedance mismatches, crosstalk and vulnerability to EMI contribute to noise and data errors in copper-based systems.

However fiber carries no electricity and is immune to electromagnetic interference. It does not create crosstalk as does twisted pair cable. Fiber can be installed under factory floors, adjacent to power lines, near fluorescent lights and other magnetically "noisy" environments. Also, since it does not carry electricity, fiber does not present a spark hazard. This makes fiber especially ideal for industrial environments where combustible gases may be present.
