But is there anything you can do to discourage criminals before they even look at your building?

Here are some important outdoor physical security measures that will also make your building perimeter less inviting to criminals.

Increase Visibility

  • Avoid blind spots by doorways, fences, support buildings and landscaping.
  • Trim tress to increase visibility, keeping lower limbs 8 - 9 ft above ground.
  • Limit shrubs to low ground cover and group plants together.
  • Install wall-mounted or freestanding lights 12-14 ft above ground.
  • Use directionally effective and bright lighting at all entry points.
  • Close window blinds and turn interior lights off so thieves cannot “shop” prior to breaking in.
  • Exterior compounds should have lights that turn off at night as light only attracts thieves and makes it easy to “shop” prior to breaking in, and easier to steal as they can see what they are doing. We recommend using SonaVision cameras that are infrared and “see” in the dark for this situation.

Limit Access

  • Use landscaping and pathways to channel pedestrian traffic.
  • Limit roof and upper floor access. Remember to consider exterior ladder, landscaping, drainpipes, signage, window frames, storage units, ledges, dumpsters and walkway covers – they all provide a “stepping stone, or a ladder” to access your upper floors and windows.

Install Fencing and Lock Down Everything

  • Lock-down all external mechanical and electrical devices (and add Sonavision Monitored Video to protect meters, HVAC, transformers etc.) in recessed vaults, or within your building.
  • Fence special areas such as utility locations and parking lots.
  • Use chain link fencing to ensure visibility.
  • Secure gates with heavy duty padlocks.
